    The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports.

    Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week.

    In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head.

    During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more deive name for the sport.

    1892年在美國馬薩諸塞州，耐史密斯博士掛起了兩個籃筐從而發(fā)明了籃球，而摩根在觀察了他的朋友的新發(fā)明之后想，對于那些已過中年的商人來講籃球運動也許過于激烈了一些。因此，四年之后，摩根發(fā)明了自己的運動項目。又過了一個世紀，他的發(fā)明——排球同籃球一道成為了奧運會上速度最快、對抗性最強的比賽項目之一。

    摩根最初給他的發(fā)明起的名字是“mintonette”，當(dāng)?shù)氐囊晃唤淌诤芸鞂⑵涠�義為一種把球擊過球網(wǎng)的游戲，于是，它最初的名字也就發(fā)生了改變。

    從排球出現(xiàn)的第一天起就一直處于各種改變之中，并很快普及開來。1896年，排球傳到了日本以及臨近的一些亞洲國家。1900年，一種經(jīng)過專門設(shè)計的球開始用于比賽當(dāng)中，在接下來的20年中，排球逐漸發(fā)展成為今天的樣子。比賽按局來計分以及每局設(shè)有最高比分的規(guī)則1916年在菲律賓率先實行，1918年起規(guī)定每隊只能有6名上場隊員，1920年，規(guī)則又規(guī)定一方擊球不得超過三次，同時允許后排進攻。

    20世紀20年代在美國創(chuàng)立了國家青年排球錦標賽，日本、蘇聯(lián)、美國等國先后成立了國家排球協(xié)會。二戰(zhàn)期間，美國士兵將排球帶到了駐扎在歐洲的基地，歐洲人很快就對這一新運動產(chǎn)生了極大的熱情。國際排聯(lián)1947年在巴黎成立，1949年國際奧委會承認排球為非奧運會的比賽項目  同年舉行了首屆世界男排錦標賽，比首屆世界女排錦標賽的舉辦僅早了3年。在這兩屆比賽中，
